Born in Diyarbakir (Turkey), Mihran Dabag studied Philosophy, Sociology and Political Sciences at the Universities of Bonn and Bochum and worked as a researcher at the Institute for Research on Development and Politics and the Department of Social Psychology (University of Bochum).
In 1994 he founded the Institute for Diaspora and Genocide Studies, the first specialized academic institution for scientific research on collective violence in Germany. He served as director of the institute until 2019.
Mihran Dabag has held a Visiting Professorship in the Department for the History, Culture, Language and Literature of the Near East at the University of Essen. In 2006 he was appointed Professor in the Faculty of Historical Sciences at the Ruhr University Bochum.

Publications
He is the main editor of the German-speaking "Journal of Genocide Studies" (Zeitschrift für Genozidforschung) and co-editor of the publication series "Genocide and Memory" (Genozid und Gedächtnis) and "Mediterranean Studies". He is the author and co-editor of several books on genocide and remembrance.
